In this comedy of sparkling dialogue, Marivaux pokes fun at relationships and questions the established order.
Silvia, Monsieur Orgon?s daughter, is afraid of marrying Dorante, the young man her father has chosen for her, without knowing him. She decides to cross-dress and swap clothes with her maid, Lisette. In this way, she hopes to get a better look at her suitor.
But Dorante has the same idea, and arrives at Monsieur Orgon's house disguised as a servant named Bourguignon, while his valet, Arlequin, pretends to be Dorante.
Monsieur Orgon and his son, Mario, are the only ones informed of the young men's disguise, and decide to give the "game of love and chance" a chance?
