After Manuel Lucas?s magnificent piano recital in Creully, we invite you to discover a new instrument claimed to be the ancestor of the piano: the harpsichord.
While its shape and keyboard are reminiscent of the piano, the two instruments are built differently. Rather than being a struck string instrument, the harpsichord is a plucked string instrument. Its sound is therefore very different from that of the piano, lighter and more delicate.
It first appeared in the 16th century, but its heyday was in the 17th and 18th centuries, during the Baroque and Classical eras, and, like many other instruments, it suffered a long eclipse throughout the 19th century, to be replaced by the piano. The same fate befell the Baroque cello, its favorite companion, which only became a virtuoso instrument after a long period of maturation.
