Hiroshimans love their gardens, as evidenced by the number of gardens and flowers that decorate the city streets, sidewalks and parks. Oleander is the city's official flower, as it was the first to bloom after the atomic blast, but the profusion of different blooms throughout the seasons keeps things interesting for flower lovers. The Flower Festival (held since 1977) is a good opportunity to get out and walk around while Hiroshima still enjoys good weather, and to see the main streets filled with flowers, music and nature every third through fifth each May.
