The Twin Coasts trail is a spectacular trail going from Horeke on the Hokianga Harbour across the North Island via Kaikohe and Kawakawa to Opua at the Bay of Islands. With one exception being a steep downhill (quite walkable) then it is all Grade 1 or 2 so not difficult at all but it is a very pretty ride at some points. It should be noted however that this is a mountain bike track mainly on dirt or gravel so is not recommended for street bikes.
We did this ride last year and had a ball even though it rained a lot of the time. Hopefully the weather will be better this year – so far looking good. It would take some fairly solid rain to cause us to cancel.
The idea is to go up early on Thursday night staying in accommodation in or around Kaikohe, meet at the Twin Coast Adventures motel on Friday morning and then spend Friday cycling the first part of the Twin Coasts trail to Horeke after which we catch a shuttle back to Kaikohe.
