Celebrating the founding of Cusco this festival is an impressive dramatization of the most important Inca festival, the Fiesta del Sol (Sun Festival). The rite ushers in the winter solstice or new sun (Inti Raymi) and takes place at the main square in front of the Sacsayhuam fortress (now an archaeological site), the courtyard of Koricancha Temple and the main square of Cusco. This ancient tradition also celebrates the journey from boyhood to manhood. Locally known as Ceremonia de Iniciación, it is an ancient Incan tradition where boys of age thirteen are tested on skills such as building skills, sports, arts and many more. Thousands of actors recreate this epic ceremony, held entirely in the Quechua language. The festivities can be observed from the stones of the Sacsayhuamor in areas that have been set aside for viewing. Takes place every June 24th and almost 100,000 people come to watch every year.
