Following the liberation of Bauang, La union, the municipality of Balaoan in the same province was the next target to be liberated by the guerilla units and allied troops. The campaign to liberate the entire Philippines continues as the 121st Infantry Regiment of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines – Northern Luzon continued their march to San Fernando, the capital of La Union. For days, the guerrillas fought a hard battle at Bacsil Ridge in an effort to gain a strong foothold in the liberation of San Fernando.
As the battle raged on, stragglers of the Hayashi detachment fled to the northern areas of La Union, including the municipality of Balaoan. Elements of the 121st Infantry pursued these stragglers and engaged them in the said municipality. Balaoan was then liberated on 20 March 1945 after the defeat of the stragglers and collaborators in the area, a day before the liberation of the capital, San Fernando. The libe…
