The Baker Hall at the University of the Philippines-Los Banos Campus was liberated on 23 February 1945. The campus was one of the internment camps during the Japanese occupation where 2, 147 defenseless civilians were forced to stay inside the camp for three years.
In order to rescue the internees, on 15 February 1945, the Hunters ROTC guerrillas, headed by Hunters 45th Regiment Commander Lt. Col. Honorio Guerrero, led a meeting at Victoria, Laguna, formerly known as Nanghaya, with senior officers of HUKBALAHAP, Chinese 48th Squadron, USAFFE Guerilla Intelligence Unit, President Quezon’s Own Guerillas, and US Army representatives.
The joint guerrilla forces came up with a plan to attack the camp on February 19 at seven in the morning. However, the plan was delayed upon receiving a message from SWPA Liaison Office Major Jay Vanderpool, the coordinator of the US 11th Airborne Division to the guerrillas.
