Liberation of Mankayan, Benguet

Location: Benguet

Address: Cordillera Administrative Region, Philippines

Date: 27 July

The liberation of Mankayan, Benguet was part of the liberation campaign efforts of the Filipino guerrillas of the United States Army Forces in the Philippines -Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL) and the Allied Forces against the Japanese Forces in Northern Luzon. It is also considered as one of the fiercest battles throughout the liberation campaign.

The Battle of Lepanto, Mankayan took twenty-seven (27) days of heavy fighting wherein the 1st Battallion, 66th Infantry Regiment of the USAFIP-NL, the lone unit supported by U.S. Artillery and aerial bombardment, was pitted against the battle-experienced troops of the Tora Division guarding the rear of General Tomoyuki Yamashita’s column in his retreat to Kiangan, Ifugao.

The fight for freedom of Mankayan concluded after the capture of the well-established Japanese garrison in Lepanto on 20 July 1945, thereby successfully liberating the town.
