The beginning of 1945 marked the long-awaited end of the war and return home for citizens of many countries, especially those forcibly displaced or held in prisoner of war and concentration camps. Before this could happen, the advancing offensive of the Red Army forced the authorities of the various camps to begin evacuations immediately: On 17 January - nearly 60,000 prisoners of Auschwitz and its sub-camps, and on 22 January - prisoners of war from the Lamsdorf camp complex. In the memory of the British POWs, this time of evacuation on foot to the west in freezing winter conditions went down as a 'death march', yet they were the group relatively best treated by the Wehrmacht. Only the sick and those unable to march remained in the camp.
