Also known as the Festival of the Winter Solstice, the Tang Chek festival is the Chinese Thanksgiving Day that is celebrated six weeks before Chinese New Year. Ancestors are worshiped, either at home or in a temple and offerings are made to them. A family reunion dinner is held where the principal food served is white or pink rice balls, which are symbols of family bonding and red bean soup. Legend has it that the devil of pestilence, who came into being at the winter solstice is afraid of red beans, hence the belief that offering him the soup will keep illness at bay.
