Innovations in the Past and for the Future:

ISU Student Creations, Virtual Visits to Foreign Lands, and Saving the Manhattan Project

What:

After gathering at the Iowa State University Student Innovation Center, we will embark on three innovative projects:

· Keith Kutz and other members of the ISU Gaffer’s Guild will present a demonstration and discussion of the art and science of glass blowing at the ISU Student Innovation Center.

· Virtual reality headsets allow users to experience other worlds in time and space. Jacob Larsen, Noemie Sollier, and other staff from the Iowa State Language Studies Resource Center in the Department of World Languages and Cultures will take you on virtual tours of the Palace at Versailles, the International Space Station, Machu Pichu, the Ostankino tower in Moscow, and the earth at the time of the dinosaurs. In the process, learn how virtual reality may enhance student learning.

· While having lunch at the Clouds Café high above Ames, listen to Teresa Wilhelm Waldof tell the story of how her grandfather, Iowa State chemistry professor Harley Wilhelm, along with a small, ragtag team of scientists and technicians made the scientific breakthroughs that led to purifying uranium for the Manhattan Project.
