A public discussion on the topic “Should We Embrace Our AI Overlords” in Ballroom A of the Strand Union Building on Tuesday, April 2nd from 6:30-8:00 PM with reception to follow.

The debate will focus on the potential of artificial intelligence, particularly the fear of eventual AI dominance, bringing to light the potential benefits and obvious risks that come with the forfeiture of human intellectual dominance.

The debate will follow an alternating pro and con speech format, with each set of speeches followed by a brief period set aside for audience interaction. With pro speaking first, each side will give a 7-minute speech, after two of which the floor will be opened for 5 minutes for brief audience questions to either the pro or con speaker. Further, during each speech debaters for the other side will have the opportunity to rise for 15 second questions or comments, with the permission of the current speaker. Audience members will be encouraged to be active participants in the debate to ensure a dynamic and complete discussion of the topic.

Debate at Montana State is a competitive debate society founded in January 2022. Since its creation, Debate has competed in a variety of tournaments against competitors from more than 30 countries, across the United States and won a variety of titles. The organization competes year-round and meets multiple times a week. All students, faculty, and community members are welcome to attend our meetings.

The event is hosted by the student-led Debate at Montana State and sponsored by the MSU Leadership Institute’s Changemakers Program. While the event is free and open to all, space is limited, attendees are encouraged to RSVP to save their space! Snacks and refreshments will be available for attendees.
