After waiting for most of the winter, we finally have decent ski conditions in northern Yellowstone! The SnoTel site at the Northeast Entrance is showing 23 inches of snow accumulation. I remember the endless weeks of early winter, when it was stuck on 7 inches; and then, when it rose to 9 inches and stayed there for a month or more. Now that the Mammoth Hotel and Dining Room are closed; and plowing has begun between Mammoth and Norris, we are going skiing!
Saturday's weather forecast for Cooke City (the closest weather station to where we are going) is: "Mostly sunny, with a high near 40. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph." I would actually prefer it a bit colder, but if we ski the Barronette trail, the shade from the mountain in the afternoon might cool things down a bit. Our alternative itinerary would be the Bannock trail, providing the powder bashers haven't monopolized the parking.
