Join Stacy Grinsfelder, wood window restoration educator, at the picturesque Silver Lake Institute this summer for an immersive, work-forward, crash course in traditional repair and rehabilitation techniques for wooden windows.

Located near Letchworth State Park in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Silver Lake Institute is a historic lakeside community comprised of Victorian-era cottages. Our workshop will be held in the enchanting 1892 Epworth Hall, offering participants a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on learning amidst rich historical surroundings while actively contributing to the restoration of a significant National Register property in need.

Participants will start by familiarizing themselves with lead-safe practices and reviewing the essential tools of the trade. Then, they'll dive into the practical aspect of the workshop, refurbishing one sash from start to finish. This comprehensive experience will cover the entire window restoration process, including sash removal, stripping, repair, sanding, glazing, and painting.

In addition to the workshop sessions, registration includes optional after-hours events designed to enrich participants' experience. These events range from a preservation-focused excursion to Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," to a guided tour Burley's Berries & Blooms to witness the magic of fresh milk production. Afterwards, wander through the wildflower crop and handpick a delightful bouquet to take home.

Rest and relaxation are also important, so we've included a delightful lakeside concert, an indulgent ice cream social, and an informal opportunity for "drinks and hangs" at a local brewery—perfect for unwinding after a day of hands-on learning and exploration.
