Hospital ships of many types have been part of the United States Navy at least since 1798. Their special status has been internationally recognised under the second Geneva Convention of 1906 and the Hague Convention of 1907.

The Australian Hospital Ships, using ship prefix AHS, were a number of converted civilian ships used for medical services during the Second World War. They were all staffed primarily by the Army Medical staff.

Several ships have been named or referred to as Liberty or as a Liberty ship: Liberty ship, a class of US cargo ships mass-produced during World War II List of Liberty ships, particular ships of that type HMS Liberty, various ships of the British Royal Navy USS Liberty, an American Revolutionary War ship Liberty, a merchant vessel launched at Broadstairs and burnt by the French navy at Montserrat in 1805. Liberty was of British origin, built in 1775, that first appeared as Liberty in 1787.

Gearing family

Family

Three generations of the Gearing family served in the United States Navy. Henry Chalfant Gearing was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1876. Gearing served on various ships of the Navy during his early years, including Lackawanna, Tuscarora, and Essex. He spent tours of duty at the Naval Academy and on board Glacier.
