Why do some LED lights go dim while others go out completely?

The short answer without getting into the electrical engineering aspect is that not all LED bulbs are created equal, even if they say dimmable on them.

If the power supply electronics fails I would expect the light to go out, not dim. Sometimes a loud bang and/or smoke is produced.
